Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about ABA therapy, getting started, insurance, and what to expect from our services.

About ABA Therapy

What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically validated approach to understanding and improving behavior. It is the most researched treatment for autism spectrum disorder and focuses on building communication, social, academic, and daily living skills while reducing behaviors that interfere with learning.

Is ABA therapy effective?

Yes. ABA is recognized as an evidence-based best practice treatment by the U.S. Surgeon General, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Decades of research support its effectiveness for improving outcomes in children with autism.

What age is ABA therapy for?

ABA is effective across all ages. Early intervention (before age 5) is associated with strong outcomes, but ABA can benefit children, adolescents, and adults at any stage of development.

What does a typical ABA session look like?

Sessions are individualized and vary by child. They typically involve structured teaching activities, play-based learning, and practice of skills in natural settings. A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) delivers direct therapy, supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

Getting Started

How do I get started with Growing Colors Behavioral?

Contact us by phone or through our intake form. We'll gather information about your child, verify insurance benefits, and schedule an initial assessment. The assessment informs your child's individualized treatment plan.

Does my child need a diagnosis to receive services?

A formal autism spectrum disorder diagnosis is typically required for insurance coverage of ABA therapy. If you are in the process of obtaining a diagnosis, we can help guide you on next steps.

How long before services begin?

Timelines vary depending on insurance and prior authorization requirements. We work as quickly as possible and keep families informed throughout the process. Many families begin services within a few weeks of initial contact.

What should I bring to the initial assessment?

Bring your insurance card, your child's diagnosis documentation, any previous evaluations or therapy records, and your child's school IEP or 504 plan if applicable.

Insurance & Cost

Does insurance cover ABA therapy?

Yes. Florida Medicaid covers ABA therapy for children with an autism diagnosis. Most commercial insurance plans are also required to cover ABA under Florida's autism insurance mandate.

Do you accept Medicaid?

Yes. We accept Florida Medicaid and work with Medicaid managed care plans to provide covered ABA services.

What is prior authorization?

Prior authorization is a process required by most insurance plans before ABA services can begin. It involves submitting assessment results and a treatment plan for insurance review. We handle this process for you.

Will I have out-of-pocket costs?

This depends on your specific insurance plan. Medicaid-covered services typically have no out-of-pocket cost. For commercial plans, costs depend on your deductible, copay, and coverage limits. We review this with you during the benefits verification process.

Services & Programs

What services do you offer?

We offer in-home ABA therapy, school-based support, community-based therapy, parent and caregiver training, assessments (initial and reassessments), and social and functional skills programs.

Where do you provide services?

We provide services across Miami-Dade and Broward counties in South Florida. Services are delivered in the home, school, or community depending on the child's program.

How many hours of therapy does my child need?

Hours are determined by the assessment and the child's individual needs. The BCBA will recommend an appropriate level of intensity and work with your insurance plan to authorize the right amount of services.

Can parents be involved in therapy?

Absolutely. Parent and caregiver training is a core part of every program. Your BCBA will teach you the strategies your child is working on so you can support their goals throughout the day — not just during sessions.
